Chardham Yatra or pilgrimage

Char Dham (Hindi: चार्धाम, romanized: चार्धाम), also known as Chatur Dham (Sanskrit: चतुर्धाम, romanized: चातुर्धाम), is a group of four pilgrimage sites in India. Since the establishment of the Char Dham temples, visiting these sites has become a path to attain moksha (liberation or salvation). Char Dham are Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameshwaram.

The Char Dhams, defined by Adi Shankaracharya (686–717 BCE), include four Hindu pilgrimage sites. These main 'Dhams' are the temples of Vishnu and Rameshwaram is the temple of Shiva.

All the Dhams belong to four Yugas.

Dham of Satyayug- Badrinath, Uttarakhand
Dham of Tretayug - Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu
Dham of Dwaparyug - Dwarka, Gujarat
Dham of Kaliyuga – Jagannathpuri, Orissa.

According to Hindu mythology, Badrinath became prominent when Nara-Narayana, an incarnation of Vishnu, performed penance there. At that time that place was full of plum trees. Jamun is called "Badri" in Sanskrit language, hence the place was named Badarika-van, i.e. forest of Jamun. At that particular place where Nara-Narayana performed penance, a big berry tree had grown to protect them from rain and sun. Local people believe that Lakshmi became a berry tree to save Narayan. Narayan said, after penance people will always take his name before his name. Hence Hindus refer to "Lakshmi-Narayan". Therefore, it was called Badri-nath, i.e. Lord of the Berry Forest. All this happened in Satyayuga. Therefore Badrinath came to be called Pratham Dham. This temple is situated on the banks of Alaknanda River in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.

The second place, Rameshwaram, got its importance in Treta Yuga when Rama built a Shiva-lingam here and worshiped it to receive the blessings of Shiva. The name Rameshwaram means "Lord of Rama". It is believed that the footprints of Ram are imprinted there.

Thirdly, Dwarka gained importance in the Dwapara era when Krishna made Dwarka his residence instead of his birthplace Mathura.

Fourthly, at Puri, Vishnu is worshiped as Jagannatha, his incarnation for the present age, i.e. Kaliyuga.

The four Shankaracharya Peethas (seats) created at least four Hindu monastic institutions in the Char Dham school of Hinduism. He organized Hindu practitioners under four mathas (institutions/monasteries), headquartered at Dwaraka in the west, Jagannath Puri in the east, Sringeri Sharda Peetham in the south and Badarika Ashram in the north.

The table below gives an overview and description of the four Amnaya Mathas established by Adi Shankara.
